Volunteering Abroad

Design your own trip

Explore the great outdoors and develop leadership skills on a guided adventure with a team of other high school students from around the country. These trips are planned and provided by our experienced partner, the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS). Explore the Great Rocky Mountains, Alaska, or the Tetons on one of NOLS' themed trips: backpacking, horsepacking, whitewater rafting, sea kayaking and others.

Discover a new country, learn a new skill or future passion, meet amazing young people from around the country - what could be better! In this program you will visit a new country and jump right into a variety of cultural and community service activities. Travel with the comfort of other American students and the structured High School Volunteer Abroad program of our experienced partner Global Leadership Adventures (GLA).

This option, created for the most independent and passionate of Fellows, opens up the world. Propose any destination, any program, any topic and you might just get approved. We don't want to constrain you to our partners and their trips, so feel free to let the imagination run free. If you can plan it, you can do it!

In order to submit a "Design Your Own Trip" application, you will need to attach an itinerary and budget to your application, detailing day-to-day locations and activities as well as any expenses you anticipate incurring.
